Knits ‘n’ Bits

I finished my summertime hat – I lurrrrve it – it’s knit out of Mango Moon viscose, and it shrieks, “Let’s go to Mexico! Drink things with wedges of lime in them! Now!”

I adapted the Chick Knits Bucket Hat pattern, because my gauge and her gauge and the yarn ….. well, let’s just say I know how to knit & have done many a hat in my day, so her pattern provided a good template for me to jump off & make my own version. I then bought rayon-covered millinery wire & joiners on eBay, so I could make the brim stay out & in shape. Otherwise, it looked pretty goofy & ruffly. It’s just damn cheerful. And who could use cheerful? Me! I’ve had long stretches of Oh, Not So Cheery, and I feel like my aforementioned forest is starting to have some clearings and dappled sunlight and genuine laughter that doesn’t echo with undertones of sadness.

I also knit a hat for my co-worker who is going through chemo. I am going to make her a couple more hats, because that is my coping mechanism. She has sailed through her treatment for the ovarian cancer, but now they think she might have thyroid cancer as well. So she needs some hats, and she needs the words “remission” and “all better now” and “relax and have fun”, and I can only do the hat part. So on and on I knit.

The first hat I’ve completed is out of Rowan CashSoft, and I guess the color is called Bella Donna. It’s a beautiful shade of lilac! It’s the Lace-Edged Women’s Hat from Headhuggers – free pattern.

All right, so with all that said, I have to thank Bekah for being industrious and being a super fan & super friend, because she has nominated my blog, and the company I keep within the hobby category is pretty lofty. I don’t pretend I’m even at the readership or skill level as the Yarn Harlot, so I appreciate her efforts to elevate my status in the Blogosphere…. She even made a cute button to promote me – seems to me like someone could have her OWN business designing webstuffs, in addition to her fabu photography skills! I can’t get the button to show up, so once I figure out where the code error is kicking me in the teeth, I’ll get it in here.

UPDATE! Got the button!

I do like that I have an “Adult Content” notation.

Well, I gotta run to a meeting, lunch is over. Happy Friday & have an excellent weekend!

Finished Knits!

I finished my version of the Klee scarf, with my hand-dyed cashmere. It’s super long, super soft, vibrant and oh-so-warm! Something I didn’t think I’d be wearing until fall, but since it’s been extremely chilly (we lost all the tomato plants, btw), I wore it yesterday.

As you can see, I’ve started a new hairdo that doesn’t involve bangs!

The Lost Points Stole that I started & knitted constantly on our 2-day business road trip got finished last week, and here are a couple pictures of it….. railroad yarn? Not so fun to knit with. It’s nice and light and airy, though, so it will be a nice spring/summer wrap that won’t be bulky or overly warm. It was fun to bind off & watch the points appear; you knit the center panel and then pick up stitches all around it, increasing at marked intervals.

What’s next? Well, some solid socks with some interesting patternwork, and a bucket hat for summer time. I started the hat last night & it’s already looking too big, so I’m going to have to fiddle with the pattern to adapt my yarn & gauge…. my favorite thing to do! I’m also teaching the Lizard Ridge class on Thursday at The Studio, it’s been some time since I taught a class & it will be fun!

The Cute? You Can’t Handle The Cute.

So a while back I mentioned that I’d knit a little something for Bekah and Mark’s new bambino, Sammy. (Stop! Sammy Time!) In its flat, uninhabited state, I took a picture of the completed booties, sweater & hat. However, Bekah is an awesome photographer, and the photos of Sammy IN her new duds and accessories are way more impressive. With all credits to her, here is Miss Samantha Marie in her Mason-Dixon Kimono sweater, hand-knit booties and the Baby Beret hat. The yarn was “YarnBee” from Hobby Lobby, for it’s washability; it was very soft & thus the hat was rather floppy. I used bright pink buttons on the sweater, and a matching button at the top of the beret. Bekah reports that she can not only work the beret with a provincial French flair, but alternately looks like a chef, and even a rastafarian baby. I’d love to say the clothes make the baby, but Sammy is cute no matter what she’s sporting….

So Many Orts, So Little Time

I have so many things to cover! And they’re not one-liner nuggets, either. It’s always good to begin the beguine at the beginning, so here we go:

1. My co-workers were treated to me singing “Man In the Mirror” (Clubland Dance 8 Version) this morning. I think my IT neighbor is going to wear his headphones a lot today.

2. I started a new project at knit night last night, which incorporates all my hand-dyed cashmere. It’s just soooo soft & lovely. I’m using Axelle’s “Klee Scarf” as my inspiration.

3. Speaking of knit night, we had our core group all in one room, and had the conversations we should have had months ago. Groups are interesting, and I think women in general tend to over-think and analyse and run through relationship scenarios, and ultimately make assumptions based on those brain-whirrings. Turns out there were some misconceptions all around the table, and it was really cleansing and positive to just get everything out. And realize how, even through our diversity, we all share many of the same goals and values. Yarn being right at the top of that list!

4. Speaking of hand-dyeing, I spent an afternoon at Kristin’s a while back & slogged through a lot of yarn (and a lot of dye….uh, I over-use the dye) to get some really pretty stuff. It’s fun to see how it ultimately turns out….

5. I decided to take a gander at my StatCounter search terms, because it’s always entertaining. Turns out someone is out there with a serious Bejeweled issue. Kind gamer soul, I hope you find the help you need. Another wants drive-thru sushi? And then there’s the great open-casket-material quote. Search on, internet, search on.

6. There’s still a lot more coming, but it all takes time. Knitting my soul back together and untangling all the knots of anger, pain, sadness….. I am tied for second place in the basketball thing, so I’m trash talking and laughing my head off when I’m asked how I went about making my picks. I’d like to keep the mystery alive for a day….. but the truth is, I just picked mostly higher-rated teams and threw in some random upsets that are bound to happen – and it turns out, so far, I’ve been lucky. It’s about time. Y’hear that, you little leprauchan? Gimme some good luck for a change!

Glove Love, Baby

So, last week, I was sick sick sick still, waiting for my horse-pill sized antibiotics to start scrubbing the badness out of my lungs, and I even stayed home from Knit Night, in hopes of speeding my recovery along. While I was home on Thursday night, I started a pair of gloves – something I’d always thought about making but hadn’t gotten around to actually doing! I’ve made fingerless gloves, which were fine and all, but not really GLOVES. And boy, they’re fun. Just like with sock knitting, I knit the wrist & palms at the same time (on two circs), and then went to individual knitting when it was time to do the fingers & thumbs. I finished them on Saturday! Here’s a photo:

Koigu gloves

I knit them out of Koigu Kersti, a merino crepe wool, absolutely lurvely, purchased at the Studio a while back, and just perfect for gloves. I didn’t use all of the yarn from each skein, and was glad I still had some leftover when I decided one thumb was too short & I ripped it out and re-knit it. I adapted the pattern found on Knitty – which left two fingers open for smokin’ a cigar, and of course, I wanted full-finger-coverage, so I basically just kept on going and followed the directions for the fingers that were knit in full, not the knuckle-only-bind-off part. (This may read quite confusing-ly. Sorry.) I knit the gloves on size 2 circs, and used 1.5 DPNs for the fingers. (Cause I’m a loose knitter.) They were great for the snow & cold wind – aaaaand now it’s 60-degrees. But I have fabulous, custom-fit gloves that, when I put the first one on, I marveled and said without thinking, “Why look at that! They fit like ….. a glove.” (Groan!)
