Riding the Bike with One Pedal.

Ladies First, LADIES First!

Did you know that some foods are inherently “girly”? I made James a salad long ago that involved mandarin oranges and he was non-plussed, to say the least. We were only dating at the time, and he was polite about it, but explained that “fruit in salad is more a girl thing.”

Then, tonight, I was sauteeing asparagus with garlic, olive oil & lemon. James stated that it wasn’t his favorite vegetable, as he considers it more a “girl’s vegetable.” WE-HE-ELL. I was not aware there was a machismo/feminine nature in the world of veggies. More asparagus for me! (After all, I am a girl!)

The ultimate in “feminine” consumables came when I brought home a new tea. “Can I have a cup of your new tea?” he asked. It was fancy lookin’. Here’s a picture:

He took a couple sips and looked at me. “This is really girly tea. Flowery. I mean, REALLY girly. Like, ULTRA-GAY GIRLY.”

And this is all coming from a man who only drank Zima and Boone’s Farm when we first met. Mmmhmm. MANLY drinks.

Good thing I don’t make a mandarin orange-asparagus salad, he’d probably grow boobs and get mad for no reason halfway through dinner. ;)

When my husband and I dated (20 years ago)it was quiche. Trying to imitate the delicious quiche I found at Andres on the Plaza, I thought I was making a really special romantic dinner one night.

He didn’t appreciate it. Said the same thing James said, “This is really girl food.” Then he added, “You wanna go out to McDonald’s now so I can get a Big Mac and fries?” No, I don’t, thank you very much.

Since making the choice to eat better and change our lives I have found my husband eating all those things that were deemed girl food previously…broccoli (yes, broccoli) among other vegetables. It’s funny when you start tasting the food rather than what the food has been drenched with.

He adores making a big stir fry full of sugar snap peas, broccoli and green onions. Sugar snap peas? Who is this guy?!?!? :)

I would think that the phalic properties of asparagus would deem it a male vege. Hmm.

I could understand the fruit salad and tea, to some extent. But, I have to admit I’d never heard of a “girly veggie.” hehe. Actually, I know more guys that like asparagus than women — when it’s cooked right.

When you listed Zima I just started to crack up. Chip used to drink Zima all-the-time! It always raised an eyebrow. He would just say that he was in touch with his feminine self. Now he drinks gin and soda, not so much more masculine!
